EVERYDAY ESSENTIALS: FALL EDITION
Well we made it to another quarter! So that means it’s time to share some of my favorite things that help keep my life sane and productive. I will include a first hand account of my opinions on the products and tools that I am loving so that you can make an informed decision before buying them yourself! I am not in any away affiliated or sponsored by these brands, they are solely 100% my thoughts and opinions.
Let’s get reviewing, shall we?! I have lots of goodies to share with you this quarter. So pull up a seat, grab your coffee and jot down a list of new things to try.
This is the pen I used in my calligraphy class and I love it. Not only is it turquoise, which is my favorite color, but it was so easy to learn on. The nibs were easy to put in, well mine was being a little temperamental at first, but once I got the first nib in the others fit perfectly. They are reasonably priced as well at $2.50 on paperinkarts.com. Make sure you are using 32# laser jet paper so when you are writing with any nib it glides and doesn’t tear up your paper.
This nib is a larger sized nib and I found it very comfortable to write with. The ink held well and I didn’t have to change nearly as much as the Brause EF66 nib. You do need to make sure you push down on the nib to create thick downstrokes so practice and get your hand positioning right. This type of nib is also perfect for oblique pens but worked very well on my straight turquoise pen and is only $1.
This nib is a smaller sized nib and is also very easy to write with, but because the nib is smaller you have to dip it into ink every few strokes. It easily creates great contrasting strokes and is probably my favorite of the two because of the ease of using it. Very flexible and fluid across paper, great for fine details and reasonably priced at $1.65 for a dozen.
Rodger Mayeda’s Oblique Pen
I had the opportunity to use this pen in my calligraphy class and fell in love with it!! It’s a bit pricey and in high demand. In fact, he only makes so many a month and because I attending my friend Lindsey’s calligraphy class I was able to get an order started. If you get the chance to try lettering with this, take it! The pen writes so smoothly because of the EF66 nib, but also because of the construction of the pen itself. It is very comfortable to use and the positioning just seems so natural. The cost may seem a little high for beginners starting out, but once you try writing with this awesome pen and nib you wont go back to any others!
I love love love these pens!! I have used them on so many projects such as handmade cards, thank you letters, doodles and other lettering projects. I particularly like the bright colors on black paper. You can also use these pens to fake the calligraphy like by drawing your letters and going over your downstrokes a few times to make them thicker. The whole set is a little pricey and it took me a while to purchase it, but I don’t regret it one bit. Not only are there gel pens of bright colors, but there are metallic and glitter options and so much more.
These are the markers I have been using for my chalk art projects and they are awesome. They seem to run out pretty quickly than the Bistro brand, but they do have a more prominent white to them than any others I have tried. They have a few sizes, although I have only tried the fine size and the only complaint I have for that size is that it was more of a regular size. They are pretty easy to use and don’t seem to pump out a lot of liquid at one time, which is always a plus! Give it a shot and see if you like this brand or if you have a brand you love comment below.
By far my favorite ink for creating on black paper. You will need to add a few drops of water to get it writing smoothly, almost like a white out type of consistency, but once you get it going it is just pure magic on the paper. I love this brand for regular use with water brush lettering and they have such vibrant colors to choose from.
This ink is a great black ink that is perfect for dip pens. It is a great quality and easily available on amazon. I use it for all my calligraphy lettering requiring black ink. There isn’t much more that needs to be said at this product. Its a great versatile black ink for dip pens.
This book is so awesome for beginning lettering, whether it is calligraphy, brush lettering or even chalk mediums. It gives great tips and instructional methods on using the tools such as changing nibs and when its ready to discard them. I particularly like the project ideas that are in the back of the books. If you are looking for tips and inspiration to get you started in lettering then check out this book, so totally worth it!
Well that is it for the things I have been super into lately! I hope this inspires you to start something new or create a new project. Happy creating 🙂
