Hi there! I am Tiara, a freelance graphic designer and hand lettering artist. I am also a marine wife, boxer mom and a DIY lover. While I am a professionally trained designer, I am a self taught blogger and carpenter.
I originally went to school for Behavioral Science and received a Masters in Industrial and Organizational Psychology, which is a fancy way of basically saying the study of behavior in the workplace. I worked as a Training & Curriculum Specialist at various military bases for over ten years creating trainings and presentations that helped increase performance and production. My favorite part of the job was creating powerpoint presentations and sketching ideas with my sharpies. It quickly became my new happy place, but graphic design was not even a thought in my head at that time.
While I was working in Arizona I met my husband where we crossed paths ironically at a coffee shop. Did I mention that I’m obsessed with coffee! Anyway, we met in 2013 and married in 2015. We then moved to Colorado after our wedding so he could pursue his dream of getting a degree in architecture and also to transition from an enlisted Marine to a Marine officer. I am so very proud of him! A few short months later I was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare type of bone cancer, that is mainly prevalent in children. I was 34 at the time so I would say very rare indeed! I went through 14 intense cycles of chemotherapy and a surgery where my humorous and humorous head (arm ball cap) in my left arm were replaced with a metal prosthetic. I also had my deltoid muscle in my left shoulder taken out as well, which limits me from lifting my arm more than 40 degrees in any direction. I have been in rehab for a year now to learn how to reuse my arm, but I will never have the ability to reach above my shoulders or lift anything without my right arm helping. Most cases of this type of cancer result in amputation of the affected area so thank goodness I still have an arm. They say God only gives you what you can handle and I remind myself of that everyday. Learning how to live again, not only with my arm, but in the bigger picture of things was very eye opening and in a way very freeing. It was this experience that led me away from working just to work and I know most of us don’t feel we have the ability to explore that and trust me that was me years ago, but after cancer I wasn’t about to let anything dictate the way I live my life. I found a lettering group and at first joined for pure interest, but as fate would have it I returned to school for my graphic design degree and am now my own boss and doing what I love.
My husband and I also have another partner in our life and that is our 8 year old boxer Bella. She is a sweet girl that just wants to be right next to you, especially if you have cheese! I have had her since she was 8 weeks old, but she also has an overwhelming bond with my husband. She loves to lay outside in the sun and hang her head out of the window on car rides. When Im not designing Im usually at the park with her or cuddled up on the couch with her catching up on our favorite shows.
A few other things about me you may not know are:
- I love coffee (did I say that already! 🙂
- I eat and use organic products every chance I get
- I am super organized and have an obsessive attention to detail
- I do not enjoy cold weather so Colorado has definitely made me an introvert because I rarely leave the house
- I am not a morning person at all and get most of my work done in the crazy hours of the night 😉
